In the spring of 1999, my father-in-law Ellsworth Fennimore died
of lung cancer. Two days prior to his death, my mother-in-law
was admitted with congestive heart failure to an intensive care
unit at a community hospital in their hometown, Point Pleasant,
New Jersey. Both of these tragic events changed our lives forever.
Suddenly and without much warning, our family needed to deal with
many different issues that required our time and attention, not
to mention a certain amount of knowledge of the healthcare delivery
system. The "fallout" from these real life events lasted
approximately 6 months. During that time, we had to coordinate
and manage from 300 miles away literally dozens of eldercare issues
including but not limited to funeral/cremation services, medical
bills, home health care services, nursing home services, Medicaid
planning issues, real estate, legal, personal banking and property.
It took an enormous amount of time to handle everything that needed
to get done. We were away from work for more than four weeks.
We spent many more hours at work and at home "surfing the
web", making dozens of telephone calls and sending countless
faxes. We did all these things because they were our parents.
Helping them was an opportunity for us to reciprocate some of
the love and nurturing that they had provided over many years.
Every family in America would do the same thing. It was during
that time that we realized that there was a real need for a company
like ParentCareUSA.
